Cutting-edge capabilities are on display at the University of Nebraska Medical Center — which drew hundreds of health care professionals from around the world this week.

About 365 nurses, technicians, and others tabbed as "medical simulationists" attended the SimGHOSTS conference, breaking an attendance record for an event used to gathering in Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

"People came from all over the world just to see all the latest innovations that they have yet to be able to experience, that hopefully someday they'll be able to put in their SIM centers," said Jacqueline McBride, SimGHOSTS executive director. "But at this point, it's here in Omaha, Nebraska."

Simulationists practiced real-world treatments using fake blood and silicone molds on table tops. The exercises and technology help prevent human errors and grow the health care discipline.

"If we increase our research output and our better simulations programs as a result of kind of coming here, it all impacts patient safety in a positive way," said Adam Roche of Ireland.

"A lot of us feel siloed in our day-to-day lives, especially when this is still somewhat of a niche industry," said Jarrod Jeffries of Denmark.
