Hankook Precision Works opens ‘3D Printing Convergence Technology Center’

Jul 10, 2023

Hankook Precision Works Co., Ltd., an affiliate of Hankook & Company, and 3D printing specialist company Tera Works co-launched a new 3D Printing Convergence Technology Center at the Hankook Engineering Lab in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon Metropolitan City, driving new momentum in new businesses using 3D printing technology.

The 3D Printing Convergence Technology Center spans approximately 661 square meters and is equipped with a wide range of testing apparatus. A team of 15 experts in relevant fields oversees the entire production process, encompassing facility design and manufacturing and post-processing, by utilizing 3D printing technology.

Through the new technology center, Hankook Precision Works aims to enhance its precision tire mold parts technology, while expanding its share in the domestic mold market through the development and mass production of new kerf – fine grooves found on tire surfaces – and new tire molds.

Currently, demand for 3D printed kerf is increasing due to its applicability to the manufacture of EV tires and high-performance vehicles. It enables the optimization of product-specific performance, including features like reduced noise, robust grip and superior handling. The 3D printing mold – which is currently being tested for mass production – also notably reduces the length of the tire production process compared to conventional molds and ensures consistent tire quality when implemented in multi-part puzzle molds.

Going forward, Hankook Precision Works will continue to build its investments and pursue innovation in 3D printing technology to generate new business opportunities.

Hankook Precision Works, established in 1973, is a mold manufacturing company that has been at the forefront of tire mold, tire curing container and precision parts development through its distinctive casting and precision machining techniques. In 2015, it became the first company in Korea to introduce a 3D metal printer for the development of mold parts for tires. The company will continue to strive towards new industry transformations, fueled by unique technologies arrived at through diligent research and development (R&D).
